The Story Begins with “Made In Huddersfield”

The Story Begins with “Made In Huddersfield”

As early as the early 1700s, the prosperity of Huddersfield’s textile trade began to emerge. It was discovered that the local water sources and rivers were exceptionally suitable for washing raw wool. The sandstone layers of the Pennine Mountains softened the water, which then flowed into the Colne and Holme valleys. Huddersfield, situated at the confluence of the Colne and Holme rivers, became an ideal central hub for the British textile industry.

The First Industrial Revolution was also born in Britain. In 1764, James Hargreaves invented the hand-operated spinning machine named after his daughter—the "Spinning Jenny." The Spinning Jenny could spin multiple threads simultaneously, significantly boosting productivity and marking the dawn of the First Industrial Revolution. Huddersfield, renowned for its textile industry, can be considered one of the cradles of this revolution, highlighting the town’s former glory.

By 1911, Huddersfield had 22,000 people employed in the textile industry. During its decades of prosperity, the town and surrounding valleys were home to hundreds of textile mills. Sadly, by the late 1960s and early 1970s, overseas competitors had made significant technological advancements, surpassing Huddersfield. The town's former brilliance dimmed. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, textile mills shut down one after another like dominoes. The textile industry, which had been Huddersfield's pride and provided livelihoods for countless families for over a century, seemed to vanish overnight, abandoned by the market.

Today, most of the mills lie vacant and abandoned. Their desolation starkly reminds people of Huddersfield’s past glories. Currently, only 1,700 people in Huddersfield are employed in the textile industry.
